New Green Smoothie

With the summer months (hopefully) right on the brink – having a smoothie for breakfast or sometimes for dinner is significantly more appealing with this warmer weather.

I however do not find smoothies to be adequate for a meal.  Smoothies with protein powder however, that’s a game changer.  It’s so refreshing in the morning, and it is filling, sometimes when I do protien shakes or smoothies I still have that urge to “chew” something, so I’ll have a piece of toast -but when I make this, I don’t have that urge, and I think it is because of the small chunks of pineapple, and spinach.

This is also a really good way to sneak in a serving of vegetables right from the get go in the morning.

I make it typically 1 of two ways – but they are pretty much the same:

Shake 1:

1 Scoop Quest Strawberries n cream protein powder

1 1/2 c coconut water

1 cup raw spinach

1/2 cup pineapple

1/2 cup strawberries

mint leaves as desired

Shake 2:

1 scoop Jay Robb Pina Colada Whey Protein

1 cup coconut water

1 cup raw spinach

1/2 cup pineapple

mint leaves

You can absolutely slash the carbs by not using coconut water, however with all of the running I do (and I do not eat bananas) this is my preferred way to potassium.  You can absolutely do unsweetened almond milk or something similar to cut the carbies down if you like.

This works well for me during training season when I need a bit more carbs for long runs, and potassium.  Last year closer to the marathon, I found I was getting really crampy – A LOT.  Like constant charlie horses, in my quads, hamstrings, and calves, and I knew it was lots of miles and not a lot of potassium.  Again by using unsweented almond milk you will cut the carbs down by over 50%.
