Hi everyone! To get our week started off with a bang I thought I’d recap my experience of this weekend participating in the Rock’N’Roll Chicago Half Marathon.
I’ve wanted to do a Rock’N’Roll event for sometime now. They have a reputation for being well executed and fun events, this event lived up to the reputation. These events are also a touch on the pricey side. HOWEVER – you get what you pay for, and if you plan ahead (like I did in this case) – you won’t pay significantly more for a 1/2 (or probably even a full) provided you sign up well in advance.
This race was on my bucket list, and I knew from when this race was done here last year – that I would want to do it this year. I signed up for this race awhile ago – I think I paid about 70-80 dollars – and I had a $10 off coupon. The amount I paid is very comparable to what I have paid for other half marathons in Chicago. I also feel like I got my money’s worth, and then some.
I only have one complaint: at packet pickup you HAD TO bring a paper sheet that confirmed your registration to packet pickup. I’m sorry, aren’t we passed the point where we need paper? It even said on there “smart phone confirmations will not be accepted” – I’m confused by this – but seriously – this is my only gripe.
Pat and I went to the expo Saturday together, it was held at McCormick Place, so it was a big expo area, and very spacious, as well as well organized.
Despite the expo being so huge and that there were so many people there – you couldn’t really tell because the event, and flow were so well organized. Pat and I are really picky about crowds and we were both comfortable.
The expo was great I got a fantastic deal on some Nuun (something I specifically went there to get, besides my packet), they had two tubes for $10, and water bottle, so I picked up 4 tubes of Nuun, and got two water bottles out of it.
There are a lot of really good samples of things as well – my favorite freebie was definitely some protein powders from Optimum Nutrition.
After the expo, Pat and I ate together, I foam rolled, he taped my knees, and I put out all of my race gear – my typical pre-race routine.
I did have to get up pretty early – the race started at 6:30, so I got up and ate my oatmeal and got out the door by 5:45.
The race itself, was mostly throughout downtown, so it was very flat, and the tall buildings blocked the rising sun, and crowd support, on course entertainment and support were great too! The aid and hydration stations were plentiful, and they even had frozen/cold sponges around mile 11.
The post race party and medal were awesome too. Pat came to see me finish, and we both enjoyed some of my post-race spoils. All in all it was a great day – I definitely wanted to be closer to 2 hours, but it was really humid, and I was drenched by mile 6, so all things considered I’m really pleased with my performance.
With racing on Sunday and this Saturday it will modify my training plan for this week:
Monday > Bike Ride/Cross Training/Strength
Tuesday > 7 miles
Wednesday > 5 miles
Thursday > 5 miles
Friday > Rest, but maybe 3 miles
Saturday > B1G 10 k and probably 5 k with Casey
Sunday > 5 miles
I’ll have to break up what is supposed to be 14 miles over two days – due to the fact that I am doing this shorter race, and my mom will be visiting – so I’m not keen on the idea of just leaving my mom so I can go run, and I’m doing another half the following weekend – so I’m not going to be at any shortage for miles.
